Comics merch pushes Pa. web retailer up and away

(AP) ? Hidden among the corn husks and rolling farmland in South Heidelberg Township sits a little-known gem most comic book fans would never recognize. With comics bursting off the big screen and infused in pop culture, SuperHeroStuff.com has tapped into the exploding demand for comic-related merchandise. According to The Comic Chronicles, a comic-book industry website, estimated total trade paperback sales in 2011 exceeded $660 million. Even sales of merchandise tied to less successful movies, such as "Green Lantern," have been strong despite weak ticket sales. "Walking Dead," based on a zombie Image Comics series, continues to break cable television records. The CBS wardrobe department ordered T-shirts from SuperHeroStuff for the character Sheldon Cooper on the network's hit sitcom "The Big Bang Theory." CONVENTIONAL WISDOM [...] recently, the merchandise distributor mainly sold through its website, www.superherostuff.com. In addition to expanding direct-to-consumer sales at conventions, the company recently established a wholesale program that allows comic shops and other retailers to purchase merchandise from SuperHeroStuff for resale in their stores, Belzer said. In the agreement with SuperHeroStuff, The Comic Store will get a percentage of sales and popular items will remain stocked on store shelves. SuperHeroStuff is also developing a mail-order business plan to ship catalogs directly to customers.
